On Wednesday, US President Joe Biden unveiled a fresh $700 million weapons package for Ukraine, which would include high mobility artillery rocket launchers that can reach targets up to 80 kilometers distant with pinpoint accuracy (50 miles).
In a statement, Biden stated, “The United States will stand with our Ukrainian friends and continue to give Ukraine with weapons and equipment to defend itself.”
Joe Biden announced the plan to give Ukraine precision HIMARS rocket systems after receiving assurances from Kyiv that it would not use them to hit targets inside Russian territory.
A senior Defense Department official said the United States would send four HIMARS systems to Ukraine initially.
It will take about three weeks to train Ukrainian forces on the use of the new systems, the official said.
Russia says the United States is adding fuel to the fire by supplying Ukraine with advanced rockets.
Jonathan Finer, deputy White House national security adviser: “Russia has brought this on itself by launching an invasion into a sovereign country”.
The rockets have a shorter range than the Soviet-era rockets which Ukraine currently has in short supply.
The package also includes ammunition, counterfire radars, air surveillance radars, and anti-tank missiles.
