Albania’s parliament elected Bajram Begaj, the country’s next president, on Saturday, a mostly ceremonial office.
Begaj will lead Albania’s highest office for the next five years after receiving 78 votes in the 140-seat parliament.
Albania’s new president is Major General Bajram Begaj, who has been chief of defence of the armed forces since 2020.
He was elected in the fourth round of voting after three previous rounds failed to reach a consensus.
The role of the president is largely symbolic, though it has some powers over the judiciary and military.
