SK Hynix Inc., the world’s second-largest memory chipmaker, is set to supply the industry’s best-performing DRAM to US graphic chipmaker Nvidia Corp.
The move is in line with efforts to meet the increasing demand for high-end products in the technology sector amid growth in cutting-edge businesses such as artificial intelligence.
SK Hynix, which has started the mass production of High Bandwidth Memory 3 (HBM3), decided to raise the output of the chip during the first half as Nvidia is scheduled to launch the H100, a new graphic processor unit, in the third quarter.
According to SK Hynix on Thursday, Nvidia has recently completed its performance evaluation of samples of HBM3 with a data speed capable of transmitting 163 full-HD movies in a single second.
The US tech giant plans to use HBM3 for the H100 as the DRAM is expected to enhance accelerated computing performance with an 819 gigabyte (GB) data processing rate, the South Korean chipmaker said.
“The company has secured top-notch competitiveness in the premium DRAM market through its close work with NVIDIA,” said SK Hynix President Kevin Noh in a statement.
Major global IT companies have been working to process surging data more quickly amid the rapid development of high-tech sectors such as AI and big data.
The trend is expected to raise demand for HBM lineups, which vertically interconnect multiple DRAM chips and dramatically increase data processing speed in comparison to traditional DRAM products, SK Hynix said.
