Cisco Systems Inc. has lost a court appeal to send a dispute involving alleged caste discrimination in its Silicon Valley headquarters to private arbitration.
Managers of Indian heritage have been accused of prejudice towards an Indian employee. California has claimed that these prejudices have spread to the IT industry, where Indians make up the majority of immigrant workers.
The state sued Cisco in 2020 after Doe complained to the company’s human resources employees about their failure to find validity in his claims that two higher-caste supervisors had refused him a job and disparaged him.
The case has sparked lobbying at US firms, colleges, and other organizations for additional standards and training on the possibility of caste bias.
