Following interruptions in China caused by COVID-19 lockdowns and Beijing’s escalating tensions with the United States, Alphabet Inc is contemplating shifting part of the manufacture of Pixel phones to India, according to a source cited by the Information on Monday.
Alphabet has requested bids from Indian manufacturers to produce between 500,000 and 1 million Pixel smartphones or 10% to 20% of the device’s expected yearly manufacturing. Sundar Pichai, the company’s chief executive officer, hinted at a plan to manufacture in India earlier this year, but no final decision has been taken. According to Nikkei, another manufacturing facility that Alphabet is exploring is Vietnam.
Through contract manufacturing partners Foxconn and Wistron, Apple Inc., the company’s primary smartphone rival, already produces at least four models up to the iPhone 13 in India. On October 6, the business will hold an event in the United States to introduce new Pixel phone versions and its first wristwatch.
