Richard Liu, the billionaire creator of JD.com, one of China’s largest e-commerce platforms, has resolved a civil claim filed by former University of Michigan student Liu Jingyao, who accused him of rape.
The complaint was part of a long-running legal struggle between Richard Liu and Liu Jingyao, a 21-year-old student who claimed Richard Liu assaulted her after dinner and drinks in 2018. It went on to clarify that the lawsuit, which began jury selection processes in a Minnesota court last week, had been settled, but did not reveal the terms of the deal. Richard Liu is a well-known Chinese millionaire who established and led JD.com until early this year.
Liu Jingyao launched the civil claim in April 2019, four months after prosecutors declined to pursue Richard Liu criminally. The scandal severely harmed Liu’s reputation in China and called into question his management of the e-commerce behemoth. In 2019, he resigned from the Chinese parliament’s advisory council, claiming “personal reasons.”
